What this test measures

The assessment maps how you relate across the dimensions below — each one a spectrum, not a box.

Secure

Connection feels like a steady place to stand.

People with a secure attachment style tend to move through close relationships with a quiet kind of confidence. When conflict arises, you assume the bond can hold it. When you're vulnerable, you don't spiral afterward about having shared too much. You can lean on others and be leaned on without keeping score. This steadiness usually reflects an internalized sense of worth — a felt trust that you matter, even when no one is actively reassuring you. It's less about perfection and more about a reliable home base inside yourself, one you carry into every relationship.

Anxious

You love deeply — and you're always listening for echoes.

An anxious attachment style means your relational radar is always on. You pick up on the smallest shifts — a slower reply, a cooler tone — and your mind moves fast to explain them, usually by asking what you did wrong. Underneath the worry sits something tender: you care intensely, and closeness matters enormously to you. Your nervous system treats connection as essential, so any perceived threat to it can feel urgent. This pattern isn't a flaw in your character; it's an alarm system that learned, somewhere along the way, that love needs constant monitoring to be kept.

Avoidant

Your independence is real — and so is the distance it creates.

An avoidant attachment style is organized around self-reliance. When emotions run high, your instinct is to withdraw, solve things privately, and return once they feel manageable — if the conversation resumes at all. Closeness can register as pressure rather than comfort, and requests for intimacy may quietly feel like claims on your autonomy. This isn't coldness; often it's an old protection. Somewhere along the way, depending on others stopped feeling safe, so you became excellent at depending on yourself. The challenge is that the same walls that keep you calm can keep others out — and love, by definition, requires letting someone matter.

Fearful

You want closeness and fear it — often at the same moment.

A fearful attachment style lives in contradiction. You long for deep connection and brace against it at the same time. Closeness can trigger a quiet question — what are they really after? — while distance triggers the ache of missing what you pushed away. People with this style describe watching themselves create the very distance they didn't want: going silent, picking fights, disappearing for a while. The push-pull usually has a history; being genuinely hurt by someone you trusted taught your system that intimacy and danger arrive together. The work isn't choosing one side, but slowly learning that closeness and safety can coexist.

Sample statements

Every statement is rated from “Not at all like me” to “This is very much me”. Here are three from the actual test:

“After a disagreement with someone I care about, I generally trust we'll find our way back to each other — even before it's fully resolved.”
“When I share something personal or vulnerable with a close person, I don't spend much time afterward wondering if I said too much.”
“I can ask for support when I need it, and offer it when someone else needs it — without either feeling like a burden or a rescue mission.”

Frequently asked questions

Is this test scientifically based?

Yes. It's built on the four-category model of adult attachment described by Bartholomew & Horowitz (1991), which distinguishes Secure, Anxious (preoccupied), Avoidant (dismissive), and Fearful styles. Like any self-report instrument, it's designed for education and self-reflection — not clinical diagnosis.

How long does the test take?

About 6 minutes. There are 20 statements, each rated on a 5-point scale, and your personalized report is generated instantly when you finish.

I purchased on Etsy — how do I use the test?

The test is included in your purchase, with no separate code to redeem. To unlock it, open the unlock page and enter your Etsy order number plus the email you used at checkout — your browser then keeps the test available for about a year. No account is needed to take it.

What does a mixed result mean?

When your two highest dimensions differ by less than 0.5 on a 5-point scale, both patterns are active. If both score 2.5 or higher, your result reads as a blend like 'Anxious with Avoidant Tendencies'; if both are lower, it reads as 'Lightly Blended'. Most people are blends rather than pure types.

What is an attachment constellation?

Your constellation is a named profile that reflects how your dimensions combine — for example, 'The Longing Withdrawer' (high Anxious plus high Avoidant) or 'The Warm Worrier' (Secure with an active Anxious layer). It's a shorthand for the overall shape of your pattern, alongside your intensity levels from Minimal to Strong.

Can my attachment style change?

Yes. Attachment styles are patterns, not fixed traits. Researchers describe 'earned security' — people who move toward a secure style through self-awareness, supportive relationships, or therapy. Learning your pattern is the first step.

Are my answers stored anywhere?

No. Your answers live only in your own browser's temporary session storage while you take the test, and they're cleared when your session ends. We don't store your raw answers on our servers. Only if you choose to save a report does the scored result get stored with your account, so you can reopen it later.

About six minutes from now, you could see your pattern clearly.

Your answers stay on your device — you just get the report.
